August Abundance

The fungi abundance flourished even further in August! We found and foraged so many mushrooms, engaged with so many mycocurious customers, and enjoyed opportunities to share our joy of mushrooms with so many people! What a full month!

Cassidy has joined our team! They will be helping with our value added products like soups and jerky! Their first task was making pickled chestnut mushrooms for the Indian Ladder Farms’ Picklepalooza event!

We visited Dancing Grain Farm Brewery to drop off some mushroom samples for the launch event of their new line of adaptogenic non-alcoholic seltzers containing a variety of medicinal fungi. They are delicious and refreshing!

The Scarlet Knife hosted a Mushroom Experience dinner. Chef Paul and his team served up an incredible evening of dishes and wine pairings.

The Childhood Tribe invited Avery to join one of their outings to explore the wonderful world of mushrooms.

Sara Tyler from Black Squirrel Farms visited with her daughter to check on the Black Walnut Shell growth experiment we are doing in conjunction with Cornell University. They left us with a few Walnut treats!

The forests in our area continued to flourish with so many wonderful mushrooms. Our team went out on educational adventures as well as harvesting missions.

The Shroom Patch continued to show off during August, and some wild Giant Puffballs moved in to join our little fungi family!

Our Forest Plot fruited some very meaty shiitake and absolutely gorgeous turkey tail.

The Pine Hills Neighborhood started a new Farmers Market. Come find us every Thursday through October from 5pm – 8pm.

As always, nearly every Wednesday we share a beer and some mushroom talk with the patrons of the Helderberg Mountain Brewing Company in East Berne, NY.

For this year’s Indian Ladder Farms Cidery and Brewery PICKLEPALOOZA we served up pulled BBQ mushroom sandwiched with pickled cabbage slaw, dill aioli, and topped with a pickled chestnut mushroom.

Our team tried out 2 new mushroom games: Mycro Mycelium and Mycelia

We attempted to make a wild lettuce resin.

Unfortunately it took days to cook down the resin, and on the last day we burned it and ruined the entire batch! We’ll try again next year!

During our August meeting we were joined by Graham Boyd from the Psychedelic Science Funders Club and Tamar Todd of New Approach. They discussed their history of passing bills in other states that granted access to various substances that promote neural plasticity.

For our September NYMHA Monthly Member meeting we’ll be discussing the actions we took in August and planning for the November 21st Fall Fungal Frolic Fundraiser. New Moon Mycology Summit, Friday, September 11 – Sunday, September 13. A gathering of all things fungi.  While this is not our event, it is really exciting to have multiple fungi forward festivals happening in our area! Avery will be teaching an identifying mushrooms workshop for ages 4 – 14 on Sunday Afternoon.
